'Nine' leads Press Academy nominations

Categories: News, Pre-Oscar Prizes

The obscure International Press Academy is known within awards circles for releasing its nominations before actually seeing all of the big awards contenders, so it’s not always wise to put a lot of stock in its lists. But they’re still interesting to glance at, particularly when it nominates Precious but overlooks leading actress Gabourey Sidibe. Also missing are Invictus and The Lovely Bones. Nine led the nominations with ten, while An Education, Precious, Up in the Air, and The Hurt Locker scored five each. The IPA’s complete film nominations are below, with some commentary under several categories. If your favorites aren’t on here, don’t fret just yet—the IPA often lives in a world all its own.

Motion Picture, Drama
The Hurt Locker
Bright Star
An Education
The Messenger
Precious
The Stoning of Soraya M.

Soraya, a little-seen indie starring Shohreh Aghdashloo and Jim Caviezel, is the biggest surprise here.

Motion Picture, Comedy/Musical
Julie & Julia
The Informant!
A Serious Man
It’s Complicated
Up in the Air
Nine

Both of Meryl Streep’s 2009 comedies were recognized, while The Hangover was not.

Actress, Drama
Emily Blunt, The Young Victoria
Abbie Cornish, Bright Star
Carey Mulligan, An Education
Shohreh Aghdashloo, The Stoning of Soraya M.
Catalina Saavedra, The Maid
Penélope Cruz, Broken Embraces

It’s truly bizarre that Gabourey Sidibe isn’t here, considering the many nods for Precious. I’d also have expected Helen Mirren to make the cut for The Last Station.

Actor, Drama
Johnny Depp, Public Enemies
Hugh Dancy, Adam
Jeremy Renner, The Hurt Locker
Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart
Michael Sheen, The Damned United
Colin Firth, A Single Man

Firth’s nod is one of only two for Tom Ford’s lush A Single Man (the other is art direction).

Actress, Comedy/Musical
Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia
Zooey Deschanel, (500) Days of Summer
Katherine Heigl, The Ugly Truth
Sandra Bullock, The Proposal
Marion Cotillard, Nine

When The Ugly Truth gets nominated, you know it’s a weak category. Meanwhile, Cotillard is the only female cast member from Nine to be campaigned as lead actress this awards season.

Actor, Comedy/Musical
Daniel Day-Lewis, Nine
Bradley Cooper, The Hangover
Matt Damon, The Informant!
Michael Stuhlbarg, A Serious Man
George Clooney, Up in the Air

Missing here? Sacha Baron Cohen for Bruno.

Supporting Actress
Emily Blunt, Sunshine Cleaning
Mozhan Marno, The Stoning of Soraya M.
Mo’Nique, Precious
Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air
Penélope Cruz, Nine

Kendrick edged out her Up in the Air costar Vera Farmiga, while Cruz was singled out over her Nine castmates Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench. Meanwhile, Julianne Moore was left out for A Single Man.

Supporting Actor
Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds
Alfred Molina, An Education
Woody Harrelson, The Messenger
James McAvoy, The Last Station
Timothy Spall, The Damned United

Though Christopher Plummer is considered the strongest male contender from The Last Station, the IPA chose the also impressive James McAvoy, who’s actually being campaigned for lead actor.

Director
Neill Blonkamp, District 9
Rob Marshall, Nine
Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
Lee Daniels,
Precious
Jane Campion,
Bright Star
Lone Scherfig,
An Education

I’m sure all the District 9 fans out there are hoping Blonkamp can continue his momentum. I think it’s great that three of the six nominees here are women.

The rest of the categories are after the jump.

Original Screenplay
Jane Campion, Bright Star
Mark Boal, The Hurt Locker
Bob Peterson & Pete Docter, Up
Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber, (500) Days of Summer
Joel Coen & Ethan Coen, A Serious Man

Nora Ephron, Julie & Julia
Nick Hornby, An Education
Geoffrey Fletcher, Precious
Neill Blonkamp & Terri Tatchell, District 9
Jason Reitman & Sheldon Turner, Up in the Air

I Killed My Mother
Winter in Wartime

Animated or Mixed Media Film
Up
Where the Wild Things Are
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Several less-obvious choices, like Ponyo, Coraline, and 9, were left out.

Documentary
Every Little Step
The Cove
It Might Get Loud
The September Issue
The Beaches of Agnes
Valentino: The Last Emperor

It’s small consolation, but It Might Get Loud and The September Issue are noticed here after failing to make the Academy’s shortlist.

I’m glad to see Hugh Dancy get some recognition for “Adam.” Of all the films that have been made centered around a main character with Asperger’s, “Adam” was the first *good* one and Dancy’s performance was top-notch.

    • TellyB

I can’t believe people are clamoring for The Hangover to be nominated for anything. That film was irritatingly unfunny and overrated.

      • alex

        i’m with you

    • Stage Left

I’m also very please with Hugh Dancy’s nomination. He did a first rate job playing Adam.
      Go Hugh!!!

  • Clayton

You forgot to post the Top 10, which has quite a few discrepancies with the Best Picture nominees

  • Job

EW neglects to mention, in the foreign language category ,the original titles of the films, and which countries they are from … as well as the double nominations of Emily Blunt and Penélope Cruz, in different categories , for different films…

  • Menchy

The comedy/musical actress catergory is literally a hot mess.

    • John

Well, at least Kidman wasn’t nominated for “Nine”… the clip of her singing “Unusual Way” is pure trash. Everything else about “Nine” looks stunning, though.

  • Eric

Hahaha what a joke! The Golden Globes are laughable, they’re just marginally fun to watch. Probably better this year with Ricky Gervais. The biggest omissions I see (Gabourey Sidibe:yes Sacha Baron Coen: No) is Star Trek for Visual Effects.

    • GoMe!

These aren’t the Golden Globes nominations…I think these are the Satellite Awards.

      • Alan of Montreal

        correct

      • JP

        Amen!

      • JP

This is one of the worst awards nominations ever. The Ugly Truth nominated for anything is a sign that these are legit.

    • MsSuniDaze

Star Trek was the first thing I noticed missing as well.

    • Stephanie

When will the Golden Globe noms come out?

      • RubyBaby

In two weeks, Stephanie – on Dec 15th. The first major critics awards are out this Friday (National Board of Review). It will be interesting to watch for differences against the IPA nominees.

    • ryan

How in God’s name was 2012 nominated for anything over Star Trek? The visual effects in that movie were stunning, not to mention it was actually overall a really well done movie

  • adam

I’m really surprised Julianne Moore (A Single Man) was left out. Also surprised that Viggo Mortensen (The Road) was left out too.
Since Up got a nod for Original Screenplay, I would have thought that Fantastic Mr. Fox could have pulled one off for Adapted Screenplay.
And Katherine Heigl? Seriously? Oh well. I guess the IPA really does live in a world all its own, as Dave said.

  • Matt

Yay for Nine!!! some surprises like TSOSM,which suprises me because only 2 months ago i didn’t know it was a movie that came out. Heigl for TUT? was Ellen Page sunavailable.

    • Matt

      *unavailable

      YAY FOR NINE AND MERYL!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW i heard that Gabourey Sidibe is receiving the Breakthrough Acting Award and Nine is receiving the Best Ensemble

  • Matt

    * unavailable.

    YAY for Nine and Meryl!!!!!!

BTW, Gabourey Sidibe got the Breakthrough Acting Award and Nine is receiving the Best Ensemble Award

  • fancypants

the best song category is really intriguing me this year. I hope “I Can See In Color” gets nominated at the Oscars so Mary J Blige can give a great onstage performance. But what if “Cinema Italiano,” from Nine actually gets nominated. Kate Hudson “singing” live onstage? yikes.

    • TellyB

fancypants, Kate Hudson is actually a very capable singer. She’s been in Saturday Night Live several times, and she’s sung live there, and she can sing. Her mother, Goldie Hawn seemingly passed it on, because she is a very good singer too. I know it’s “cool” to hate on Kate, bust as crappy as her films are, let’s at least give credit where credit’s due…

      • fancypants

i made my comment about Kate’s singing based on the new trailer i saw for Nine which prominently featured her singing. IMO, she did not sound good–she talked the song. also, i couldn’t understand what she was singing when the tempo picked up (she wasn’t articulating). she was below average in a video that was heavily edited and was not live. i don’t think she’ll sound great singing live.

  • Tanni

What !!! No Gabby for “Precious”
I’m rooting for Director Lee Daniels
MoNique for best Supportting .. and..MARY J BLIGE .. For “I Can See In Color” !!!!

  • Collin

Though I have not mysel seen it yet, I think it is a big oversight to not condider Avatar for the visual effects category.

  • paige

its good to see District 9 is being remembered…

  • Danno

Just hurry up with the real Oscar noms already. This article was a wast of time. Whatever this award is it loses all credibility when it nominates Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (A live action film) for best animated feature.

    • John

Well to be fair, it is an “Animated or Mixed-Media” catagory, which also explains the “Wild Things” inclusion. Still, relatively insignificant nominations.

      • Danno

So by that rationale was Titanic nominated as best animated feature from this awards commitee because it had a special effects shots? I’ve already wasted too much energy on this ridiculous list. Cant say the writer didn’t warn me.

    • Danno

OMG Where the Wild Things Are is live action too!!!

    • paige

      you are absolutey right danno

  • Alan

Very surprised to see no mention of Star Trek for at least a technical award, if not direction or screenplay.

  • anon

No Watchmen for technical categories? Seriously?
