I’ll admit I was a little surprised when Viggo Mortensen showed up to our scheduled interview at the Toronto film festival with his young costar from The Road, Kodi Smit-McPhee. And I was a bit thrown when I realized they were wearing matching hockey shirts. But once we started talking, I realized why Mortensen wanted Smit-McPhee around: After the intense shoot of The Road, they’ve clearly become blood brothers. Here’s our interview, where we discuss, among other things, their love of the Montreal Canadiens and who smelled worse on set.

Arg! The Road did not open in my town. I read the book over the summer and was really looking forward to the movie.
They couldn’t have found anyone better than Viggo. I can’t wait to see this. I love the book so much and from the trailer it looks like they got it right. I really liked Hillcoat’s last movie, The Proposition so I’m hopeful he can deliver.
What’s your problem with Viggo? He’s a good actor. Would you prefer they cast Will Smith. Seems right up his alley.
He’s making a statement, not asking a question. “They couldn’t have found anyone other than Viggo.” That’s a compliment and an approval.
I read the book and I love Viggo Mortensen but I do not think I can watch the movie. It would be very difficult to see it realized on screen.
I LOVED this book. It is without a doubt my new favorite. It replaces Daulton Trumbo’s “Johnny Got His Gun” I’m not sure about the movie though. I’m sure Viggo will be great in it and all but I just don’t see how the book will translate. I’ll have to check it out obviously but it’s going to be hard to go in with an open mind on this one.

Totally awesome film….Viggo is destined for an Oscar consideration for 2010.
Over George Clooney? I think not.
What? I hope not. Viggo is a much, much better actor than George Clooney. Sure, Clooney’s a bigger name, but Viggo is a great actor. I hope the Academy realizes this. But I won’t hope too much, all these awards are just Hollywood giving itself a big pat on the back. Not that Clooney’s awful, but comparatively there’s no question.
Besides him being a great actor, I like him because he doesn’t seem to care much for fame and the whole Hollywood thing. He seems like a very likable, geniune, down-to-earth kind of guy.
Viggo is perfect for this role. After reading the book I saw the world with different eyes. Go see this movie: it will make you cry, but it will also make you feel thankful for every little thing you have in your life.
they’re cute together. i balled my face off in the final pages of this book. i hope the movie is as good.
