The Producers Guild of America announced today that Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire will receive its Stanley Kramer prize next year. The special award recognizes a film that “illuminates provocative social issues in an accessible and elevating fashion.” Last year’s Kramer award winner was Milk, which also earned best picture nominations from the PGA and the Academy. In two weeks of limited release, Precious has already grossed an amazing $8.7 million.

Is this the first award announced of the season? Or have I missed something? In any case, I guess Precious is now the front-runner. I’m planning to see it this weekend!

Here we go again…..another awards season with movies that people dont see and make no money….how about UP, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Public Enemies, the Hangover…..movies that people actually went to and movies that made money
Um…of that list, only UP is Best Pic material. Public Enemies and Hangover were atrocious, Harry Potter and ST were solidly crafted popcorn entertainment that would only be Best Picture stuff in another universe. Precious us brilliant, uplifting, sharply directed and superbly acted. Plus it’s making tons of money for the amount of theatres it’s playing in.
I would hardly call The Hangover “Atrocious”, it was probably the funniest movie of the summer! But is it oscar worthy? No. That is all.

Dirk… “Precious” just came out and is doing tremendous box office. Word of mouth is also very good. I wouldn’t be surprised if this film outgrosses “Public Enemies” by the time the Oscars come along.
Precious is BY FAR, one of the best movies I have seen in several YEARS. I am quite sure it will be nominated, and I will be really surprised if it doesn’t win.
