Over the past few weeks there have been a few whispers that Paramount was considering campaigning for Up in the Air’s Vera Farmiga in the Best Actress category so that she wouldn’t compete with her breakout costar Anna Kendrick. Now I hear from Farmiga’s camp that her campaign will definitely be in the supporting actress race. Even though it’s not ideal to have multiple contenders from the same film in one category, it’s certainly the right decision in this case. I haven’t counted their minutes of screen time, but having seen the movie twice now, Farmiga’s role seems smaller than Kendrick’s; there are patches of the film where she doesn’t appear at all.
So can both Up in the Air ladies make the final cut? With Mo’Nique (Precious) and Julianne Moore (A Single Man) seeming like safe bets at the moment, it all depends on how many bona fide contenders end up coming out of Nine. Depending on how the film turns out, it could provide three Best Supporting Actress nominees…or none.

Aren’t you being a bit premature in predicting the 5 nominees? What about
Amy Adams or Jane Lynch for “J & J”? And there are others, too.
I love Jane Lynch, but I don’t think by any stretch of the imagination could she get a nomination.

I am all for this Vera Farmiga love. Joshua, the Departed, Nothing but the truth and even Orphan, showed what Vera can do. Lets give her a nomination already.
Anna Kendrick all the way.
I’m sick of movies that haven’t even come out yet campaigning for Oscars. What a circle jerk.
Up In The Air has made the rounds at all of the festivals already, so many of the people involved in Oscar voting (i.e. not us normal folks) have already seen it.
Yeah, is it really any good? Doesn’t look it from the clips.
Certainly not Oscar-worthy for anything more than the script.
Some people are calling it the front-runner for Best Picture. I’d say that it’s probably good.

gross…
What about Emma Thompson for “An Education”?
I certainly hope she will be considered. A good actress in an apparently worthy movie. It just depends on how successful “An Education” is and how successful “Nine” and “Up in the Air” are. Read my take on the prospects of “An Education” here:

Emma Thompson absolutely should get a nomination for An Education. It’s been far too long since her work has been recognized.
“To really get under your skin, a bad-seed horror movie needs a demon child whose dastardliness sneaks up on you. There’s nothing too subtle, however, about Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), the 9-year-old orphan adopted by the Colemans (Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard), who are out to put their tragic memories of a stillborn baby behind them. Pigtailed.”~EW
and scary, but a terrific performance by Isabelle Fuhrman who rightfully, also deserves an Oscar (supporting or best Actress) nomination from ‘The Orphan’ a movie that Vera F. co-starred in with her!
Vera Farmiga was so great in ‘Nothing but the Truth’..rent it!
She was terrific in Nothing But The Truth, as well as The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.
Dave, how did you like Up in the Air as a film?
I’ve seen Up in the Air (I saw it at TIFF). It is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Great writing, directing, acting…this is in it for the long haul…
I’ve heard nothing but great things about it so far. I wish I would’ve been able to see it, and I’m a little upset it got pushed back to December, but if it helps it’s Awards campaign, I’m all for it.
interesting
I like Vera Farmiga, but I think there are stronger performances in the running. I want to see Marion Cotillard nominated for “Public Enemies.” She turned what could have been a pretty lame role into something very special.
Vera Farmiga rocks! From the moment I saw her performance in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas I could smell Oscar in her near future!!!!
