Part of me just wants to skip this week’s roundup altogether, since the only film with any awards hopes whatsoever is Amelia. And even that is seeming more like a stretch with each review that comes out. But let’s run down its chances anyway.
Possibles
Best Actress, Hilary Swank: She’s certainly an Academy favorite, and biopics are the best way an actor can catch voters’ attention. But ouch, those reviews!
Best Supporting Actor, Richard Gere: He’s never been nominated (despite winning a Golden Globe for Chicago). And I’d say he’s the best thing in the movie.
Best Original Score, Gabriel Yared: Like Swank, he’s also a past winner (for The English Patient). And his swelling is score is a large part of the film’s epic feel. But ouch, those reviews!
Best Cinematography, Stuart Dryburgh, and Best Costume Design, Kasia Walicka-Maimone: Say what you want about the weak script and some stiff acting. The movie still looks spectacular.
Long shot
Best Picture: A talented director, a great period look, a prestige cast. It seemed Oscary months ago, and some older voters might still cotton to the film. But…well, you know.

No way Ameila gets nominated for anything. The reviews are horrible! If it gets a nomination than I say why not nominate Couples Retreat. It got the same amount of bad reviews.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see SWANK as one of the Best Actress contenders. The Academy seems to like her – ALOT – and as Karger mentioned they are an older bunch and could fall for this film…bad reviews and all!
I saw Amelia last night, and while it didn’t exactly move me to tears, I thought it was a very good, old-fashioned biopic. The only problems I had were in the script or editing. It seemed some things, just happened without much buildup.
It may not be the best movie of the year, but I really do not think it deserves the atrocious reviews it has been getting.
How could they screw up this movie so badly? Amelia Earhart is a fascinating figure from history – but I really have no desire to see this film.
Oh come on….no possible Oscar nominations for Saw VI?
There are too many actually worthy movies this year (A Serious Man?) to give a perfunctory nomination to a period piece.
I saw Amelia today, and if anyone gets ’supporting’ for it, it should be Christopher Eccleston for his portrayal of Fred Noonan. Best performance in the movie, though sadly less screen time than others.
Amelia isn’t going to get nominated for anything. For reasons why visit my blog at http://highoncelluloid.blogspot.com/ Yes. I am manipulative enough to use your blog to advertise my blog. How else would anybody go to it?
