A top candidate for breakout actress of the year is certainly Carey Mulligan, the 24-year-old Brit who’d only had supporting parts in two films (she was one of Keira Knightley’s little sisters in Pride & Prejudice) when she scored the plum lead role in An Education (in theaters next Friday, Oct. 9). As precocious London schoolgirl Jenny, Mulligan not only holds her own opposite castmates Peter Sarsgaard, Emma Thompson, Alfred Molina, and Sally Hawkins, but she completely carries the film, which was written by novelist Nick Hornby and directed by Danish filmmaker Lone Scherfig. And as you’ll see when you click play on Part 1 of our OscarWatch interview, she’s going to charm the pants off the Academy and should have no problem scoring a Best Actress nomination.
Watch me and Missy Schwartz rave about Mulligan in our Best Actress chat. And follow me on Twitter (@davekarger) for Oscar updates all season long. My interview with Mulligan is after the jump.

Great Interview, Love her.
Loved her since Doctor Who.
Don’t Blink!
Don’t blink at all!
You know, as much as I love Blink, though, my favorite Doctor-Lite episode is Love & Monsters, which was on this week on BBC America. But, Carey is gonna have a very big international career, she’s incandescent on camera.

I saw “An Education” at Sundance and I thought she was absolutely wonderful in it. I’ve love to ask her, though…if she thinks “The Time of Her Life” is a terrible title, what does she think of the title of her next film, “Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps”?
She’ll always be Sally Sparrow to me.
She was wonderful as Sally Sparrow in Doctor Who’s “Blink”; but I first saw her as Ada in the BBC’s “Bleak House.” Carey was utterly fantastic in that role!
She was lovely in Bleak House. So young and in love, waiting for her inheritance, until tragedy happens.
why do you keep correcting what she says, dave?
It’s funny—after the interview ended I asked my producer, “Do you think my adding her castmates’ last names is going to come across as rude?” I hoped it would just be a fun joke. Oh well!
OH! It’s Sally Sparrow! Yay.
I love how the teaser mentions Doctor Who then you click the link and you get no mention of the stellar episode she was in.
Ha ha, clearly they were just trying to get our attention with the Doctor Who thing.
In any case, it’s cool seeing he do so well. It was obvious from her Who episode that she had the makings of a real star.
You sneaks! No mention at all of “Doctor Who” and my favorite episode. Loved her as Sally Sparrow, but saw her first as Isabella in “Northanger Abbey,” which I liked very much.
Sally Sparrow! Seriously, does anyone not like Blink? As incredibly as the story was it probably wouldn’t have been half as compelling if Carey Mulligan hadn’t been so strong in it. Amazing. I hope her career goes the way she wants it to.
I got the humor Dave! Obviously you want all the people involved to be properly represented, so I had no problem with it. Great interview!
Shia Labeouf is sooo lucky to be dating Carey
I don’t know why this article makes it sound like two minor film roles are all she’s ever done. Major roles in high-class BBC productions like Bleak House and Northanger Abbey really ought to count for something, doncha think?
She really is a doll, so talented. I want so much to see her getting an Oscar nom, she was FANTASTIC in An Education. SOOOOO CUTE
and I thought it was cute that she never mentions the last name from people. This is a wonderful interview Dave, you did a good work.
She and Shia really make a cute couple, just adorable.
please, tell me you have part 2. I just love to hear her voice
Decent movie but this was a very underwhelming performance especially with all the hype she’s been getting.
I saw the movie, nothing great. Mulligan was fine and sometimes tad boring. I think it will still be Meryl Streep for best actress for Julie & Julia.
