Looks like Meryl Streep finally has some Best Actress competition. Australian up-and-comer Abbie Cornish, a standout from past indies like Somersault and Candy, is now having her international breakthrough moment with Bright Star (opening tomorrow), Jane Campion’s love story about poet John Keats and his 18-year-old neighbor, Fanny Brawne. In part 1 of our OscarWatch interview, Cornish talks about how she pulled off such a dream part.

Might be my number one to see, I don’t really know why, but there’s something about it that intrigues me more than some others.
Sorry, I will never like this girl. Isn’t she the one that Ryan Phillipe cheated on Reese with?
AGREE!!!
to quote the best line of the year in film so far:
Fuckety-bye-bye then!
Dave, can you PLEASEEEEE get Ben Whishaw?
As for everyone else, get off Abbie Cornish’s back.
totally agree about the ben whishaw thing…
I agree, if you are not going to watch a beautiful movie (just saw it yesterday, loved it!) because of the actor’s personal life then go read people magazine!
Yea she is the one that Ryan cheated on Reese with, and I didn’t like her for a long time because of that, but then I watched the movie “Candy” with her and Heath Ledger and she was honestly amazing. She is very very talented.
I think Abbie did Reese a huge favor. Ryan Phillipe strikes me as a first class jerk. Jake seems like a much nicer guy.
Something about Reese clearly made Ryan Phillippe miserable. Since he’s gotten away from Witherspoon he seems healthier, happier and more comfortable in his own skin and Gyllenhaal seems stressed, tense and angry. It’s like he switched personalities with RP.
wow – its obvious who EW’s target audience has become. celebrity whores.
Bright star was amazing, best picture of the year, and Cornish deserves an Oscar.
