I believe that there should be a category for Comedy/Musical and one for Drama/Action along with the Animated and Foreign Film categories. 10 Best picture nominees is too many for one category and I don’t think you can lump different movie types in one category. More like the Golden Globe categories. An Ensamble award for acting would also be nice.

They also like Dreamworks Animation.

In 2001 Shrek won best animated feature despite competition from Pixar’s Monsters Inc.

In 2005 Wallace and Gromit Curse of the Were Rabbit, in a coproduction with Nick Park’s Aardman studios, won despite competition from animations producesd by Hayo Miyazaki (Howl’s Moving Castle) and Tim Burton (Corpse Bride).

Other nominees have included Shark Tale, Shrek 2 and Kung Fu Panda.

Monsters vs Aliens is a strong contender this year.

Not always though. Roman Polanski managed to win for the Pianist against Rob Marshall, who’s Chicago beat The Pianist to Best Picture.

I think it’s an awful change. I don’t think there is a need to have the more commercially-successful films in the running. There are two different types: box-office hits and the quality movies. I don’t think that the movies that the masses go out to see are necessarily good movies. And that’s fine. The Oscars is about recognizing excellence in film. I doubt there will be ten films that will adhere to such a high standerd that is deserving of an Oscar. Plus, now the nomination isn’t as big of an honor.

This is a 100% marketing move. The film industry is hurting. This just means five more movies next year are going to get the extra press, the re-release and the extra DVD push. Wall-E and The Dark Knight would not have won best picture, but would have benefited financially in a huge way from a nomination. This isn’t because there are more better movies.

At first I was excited for the news of the new expansion but now the thought borderline disgusts me. I can’t remember a year that 10 movies should have been nominated. Since there is no such thing as second place there will be nothing that separates the “should have been winner’s” from the “10th best movie of the year”. Being nominated will lose its meaning. It is sad.
