Danny Boyle: The man of the hour

Categories: OscarWatch TV

With 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, Slumdog Millionaire is certainly the movie to beat next month. In part 1 of our OscarWatch interview, Slumdog director Danny Boyle talks about the film’s riotous toilet scene, the magic of subtitles, and why his director of photography hates him.

Sorry Dave, but Curious Case of Benjamin Button is the one to beat. It garnered 13 noms including all the big ones you mentioned above. However, I’m still rooting for Slumdog since Button is just Forrest Gump redux.

The Indian Government has in its own way and with constitutional safe guards tried and is trying to uplift the morale and instil confidence of this less fortunate brethren of slums
.slums need to be converted into a decent living and labour should be given adequate dignity.
In starking contrast walks MR BOYLE who has despised the pitiable condition and ridiculed the slum life calling them SLUM DOGS an inhuman term defaming the vast slums of the country who are not to be blamed for their condition.
The movie shows the country in bad light and has given the nation a wrong identity .
In one deadly stroke it has brought disrepute to the nation and ridiculed and defamed poor slumdwellers -who do not understand the damage nor the pathogy of their poverty.
Recently the prince of Britain apologised for inhuman racist remarks.
It would do a lot good if the derogatary term SLUMDOG is changed to underdog millionaire or poor rich genius since .this is my humble request to Mr Boyle

Good job Dave! Benjamin Button was super lame cheese. Slumdog will steal the thunder.

Sid_rth, you have completely missed the point of the movie.

I was very enthusiastic about Benjamin Button until I saw it. Now I know what everyone meant when they said it had no heart.

Benjamin Button may be a Forrest Gump redux, but don’t forget that The Departed was also a redux of Infernal Affairs, and still won Best Picture. From the movies nominated, this and Milk would be my choice.
I’m personally a bit frustrated that The Dark Knight was left out of Picture and Director, it was the best movie I watched last year (and I watched the majority of the movies nominated). If instead of a summer release, it would have been a December one, it would have been nominated, no question about it.
Slumdog Millionaire was good for about 30 minutes, then it became a cheesy love story. Until the climax of the story, when it became interesting again for about 5 minutes. In my opinion it was a very good movie, but not “that” good to get the Oscar. Too many unrealistic situations For example, they tortured him like a terrorist at Gitmo because he cheated on a quiz show??

Interesting interview, Dave! And thanks for asking about the toilet scene – I really wanted to know what that was, so I’m very relieved Boyle’s answer!
And yes, Slumdog is definitely the movie to beat – it has won more critics awards than any other film this year, and people really love it, whereas they don’t necessarily love Button. Slumdog will win.
