The 66th Annual Golden Globe awards have been handed out, and I actually fared pretty well in my predictions: I guessed 10 winners correctly out of the 14 movie categories, and 19 for 25 overall. But there still were several things that didn’t go as expected. Here are my 5 biggest surprises of the night.
Slumdog goes 4 for 4 I suspected that Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Simon Beaufoy would emerge victorious, but for the film to sweep all four of the categories in which it was nominated—including Best Drama—is remarkable. This film seems unstoppable for the rest of the awards season.
Kate Winslet’s one-two punch Obviously the HFPA wanted to give Winslet her first Globe this year. But her double wins (Best Actress in a Drama for Revolutionary Road and Best Supporting Actress for The Reader) were shocking considering her tough competition in both races. Could this finally be her year at the Oscars?
Benjamin Button’s shut-out For the second time in four days (following last Thursday’s Broadcast Film Critics Association awards), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button went into an awards ceremony tied for the most nominations and went home empty-handed. Button still stands to score the most Oscar nods on Jan. 22; will it actually be able to win a couple?
Best Actor: Colin Farrell? Emerging victorious over strong competitors like Last Chance Harvey’s Dustin Hoffman and Vicky Cristina Barcelona’s Javier Bardem (and apparently avoiding vote-splitting with his own In Bruges costar Brendan Gleeson), Farrell won the Best Actor in a Comedy category in the biggest surprise of the night. Now maybe people will seek out that terrific and wicked film (it’s on DVD).
Heath Ledger’s shocking win for Best Supporting Actor (Just kidding.)

Why does EW and Dave Karger care what 80 bottomfeeding foreign journalists give a statue to? And these people are known to accept bribes. It’s a joke, and so is EW for covering it as if it’s legit!
LMAO at the last one. Oh Dave, funny and hot!
Hurrah In Bruges! I was really glad when it got some notice for being such an excellent (and unfortunately overlooked) film, so yeah, hopefully some people will take this as a sign that they should see the movie!
And the golden globe once again proves its insignificance. Kate Winslet doubly rewarding. Anna Paquin as best actress in drama?!. And Colin Farrell best actor in comedy hahahahaha!!!. Absurd!.
Biggest surpise. Drews crazy hair, but she did look fabulous.
I agree Jason and Tom. I kept laughing with my husband when the winners were so emotional. They could win the award with about 25 votes. I got more than that in my high shcool election.
Hurray for Kate Winslet — hopefully she will win come Oscar night. She is constantly nominated, but has yet to win. Still not getting the love for Slumdog — it seems to have gotten awfully mixed reviews everywhere. But I can understand the Benjamin Button losses. It’s one of those “well done” films that you walk away from feeling just “eh”.
Folks, don’t take this too seriously. What did any of then win? A little statue. How can anyone be judged better than anyone else? None of them played the same role. Why is life a competition? I watch for entertainment and snarkiness only.
Kate Winslets over dramatized, phoney, effected speech turned me against her. I was also surised by the utterly lack of talent displayed in her acceptance performance. How is it she couldn’t have put her skills to work if she was going to fiegn suprise and humility, not to mention the phoney tears of joy. I almost vomited. Mickey Rourke gave the most sincere speech I’ve heard in 30 years of watching awards shows. It was very genuine and touching. One for the books.
Loved the special moments for Colin Farrell, Heath Ledger, Anna Paquin and Kate Winslet (it’s about time!). I have to admit it was strange for Colin to win, but I think he’s done a lot with changing his life around and it shows in his acting and speech-giving. Heath, enough said. He was golden. Anna, who else can pull off the drama of being a Southern telepathic waitress in love with a vampire trying to find her grandmother’s real killer in order to get her brother off of the hook than an actress from New Zealand? This is the thing about the Golden Globes, they like individuality, they like different. And Kate is just awesome in everything, I am so happy for her!
Oh Sweet Jesus people…if you’re annoyed EW is covering the Golden Globes and award ceremonies in general then I can tell you you’re reading the wrong magazine. Or at least that you would make the worst magazine editors in history.
Wow, Kim, how cynical of you. I thought it was anything but fake. Just because someone doesn’t behave the way you expect them to doesn’t mean they’re insincere. I thought Kate was very gracious, especially when talking about Leo and her husband. According to the live blogging from last night, it even brought others to tears. I guess you’d say they were faking it, too?
Anyone that doesn’t think Colin Farrel should have won haven’t seen the movie. I always thought he was gorgeous, but when I saw In Bruges, I realized the boy can act. See the movie, then hush!
I agree with Kim. I was so embarrassed for Kate Winslet for that lame speech. It made me feel the same way I do whenever Sally Field or Halle Berry get awards. So over the top. Tina Fey was funny, Mickey Rourke was great. He was totally sincere and I thought it was nice to see. Loved his sequened scarf.
Colin Farrell was just plain weird. Ricky Gervais was awesome. He’s so funny and was a tad awkward like David Brent last night, but it worked.
Colin Farrell was brilliant in the hilarious In Bruges – a film that is genius! Haters can suck it… lol
I am so, so happy that Kate Winslet won TWO awards. She so seriously deserved it. And of course her tears were genuine! The woman has been nominated a bazillion times and she’s NEVER WON a Hollywood award. Talk about a lot of built up tension over the years with no pay off. I don’t blame her for crying!
Agree with Brandi and Cindy – I’ve never been a big Colin Farrell fan but he was great in that movie. Anyone who hasn’t seen it shouldn’t knock his award until they do.
I would imagine that BB might pick up some awards for special effects/makeup at the Oscars but hopefully Slumdog will continue victorious in the big ones.
It was just great to see Mickey Rourke win because he’s gone through some rough times and his abilities as an artist have been forgotten for so long. The Globes should get no credit for finally giving Winslet an award or 2.That’s like saying Jordan was the best basketball player.Let’s hope Oscar wakes up too.I haven’t seen In Bruges but I’m a fan of Colin Farrell and hope he keeps the focus on his work and not the other crap cause he’s a real talent. He should look at Rourke’s career and learn a lesson or two. It’s nowhere near too late for him. I was really pleased to see Farrell win last night.
Soo happy for kate I cried when she won both times. She is truly deserving and her speeeches were wonderful. I cried when she expressed her love and admiration for leo and her hubby. I hope this is her year at the oscars.
Kate has been overlooked for so long she was not expecting to win, hence her shock and unprepared remarks. Come on people, give her a break!
There is no way Benjamin Button can seriously win Oscars. well, maybe for makeup. it was touching (sniff), but in no way…authentic. So, I believe there are candidates for Oscar whose authenticity alone leaves BB’s chances (for Best Picture anyway) very unlikely.
While I wasn’t surprised that Slumdog won Best Drama, I really don’t think it deserved it. Sure, it’s a great film, but compared to the other front runners, it doesn’t compare.
Ooo Mark, I totally agree! Dave is way hot!
The Hollywood Foreign press seems to love to reward anything with an international connection. Slumdog Millionaire is a perfect fit, with its “indy” feel. I dont think the film is Hollywood enough for the Oscars. Havent seen In Bruge, but still breaking out in cold sweats after “Alexander”, so Farrell has a long way to go to regain cred!
the words colin farrell and brillaint should never be put in a sentence together….i’m just sayin…
Kim until you work hard and deliver one great performance after another, lose 5 times and then find yourself winning TWO major acting awards in the same night you need to shut up. I don’t see how anyone in their right mind could think that was acting. lmao. That was the most genuine super emotional speech. Not a single false note anywhere. Your post is funny if you thought that was acting. Kate Winslet is a really emotional woman and she was in shock that she won twice. Why is that so hard to understand?
It would be shocking if Slumdog Millionaire didn’t win best picture at the Oscars. Slumdog is the better of the picks. Nothing against all the over-hyped movie choices such as Benjamin Button, but thats what they are.
manny, i’m sure you’re a great person.. but really. anyone who thinks colin farrell is a “real talent” yet thinks that kate winslet doesn’t deserve to win (the girl is easily the most talented actress of her generation) can’t even begin to be taken seriously.
Exatly Jason Texas,
Come on Colin Farrell comedy and Anna Paquin drama?? Isn’t True Blood comedy or soap opera. Why is it in drama section?? Why are these people even nominated?
