I loved loved loved Milk. Absolutely amazing movie. The entire cast was phenomenal. And I saw Frost/Nixon and thought it was pretty good, but then again, I like Michael Sheen. And I cannot wait to see Revolutionary Road, it needs to open locally like now. Yay Kate and Leo!

"Milk shouldn't be there. It was good, but it's a homosexual movie: people are taking it WAAAAY too seriously."
Milk is far more than "a homosexual movie". It is about a time and place. It's about 1970's San Fransisco and a man who had "accomplished nothing" by the time he was 48 and then decided to take a chance in making a difference in his community. Harvey Milk, besides being an important political figure, was a fascinating, charismatic individual who started out as a nobody and wound up willing to die for gay rights. I'm not gay, but I think the desire to fight for something meaningful is inbred in all of us. That's what Milk is about. In my opinion, no other film was more alive in 2008. It is at once celebratory and funny, as well as gritty and moving. I fear many people missed the subtleties of the film and passed it off as being just a typical biopic, or worse, just a "gay movie".

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button-Best wide-release movie of the year. Mind all of you, that doesn't mean the best movie of the year, but it certainly had a magical feel.
The Dark Knight- Thought this movie was extremely good, but not deserving of a slot. As Lily said, the academy awards do need to nominate it to boost their ratings, but it would be a shame if it won.
Frost/Nixon-Surprised of all of the negative comments this movie is getting here. I thought it was very good, like a wrestling match with graceful characteristics. Hope it gets a best pic slot.
Milk-Best movie of the year, hands down. Emotionally powerful and well-written, I hope it wins best pic this year.
Slumdog Millionaire- The only movie I'm okay with taking the win away from Milk. This movie was a well-written fairy tale that reflects the world today.
My top ten of 2008:
1. Milk
2. Man on Wire
3. Slumdog Millionaire
4. TCCBB
5. The Visitor
6. Frost/Nixon
7. The Wrestler
8. Doubt
9. WALL-E
10. The Dark Knight

the dark knight is more than a comic book film. The hero may be a man dressed in a bat costume but apart from that it is a striking and brilliantly directed crime drama with great performances from the likes of heath ledger and gary oldman.

Hollywood has been begging for a movie such as The Dark Knight for a long time now to come in and shake things up. It's about time things changed within the Academy. The film presented great acting, a thrilling and captivating story, Awesome dircting, and the sound was unbelievable.
The Late Mr. Ledger's performance as The Joker raised the bar high enough for screen villians that to top it is going to take quite some time if ever. Did the fact that Heath died help sell this movie? Yes, it did. but it does not take away the acting, or anything else from the film. And please keep in mind that this was not his last role on screen. He partially completed his scenes for The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnasus which is due out this year. And his scenes will be kept in the film.
Should The Dark Knight win? Yes, In my opinion it should. But that is not up for you or I to decide. We all go to movies a lot. But that does not make ANY of us experts. People get degrees in Film. Let them decide who wins

I'm in the UK and so have yet to see Frost/Nixon or Benjamin Button. It's great to see Milk on the list though but I'm in a tiny minority of those who really didn't like Slumdog: two-dimensional, black and white characters, no shading; a wooden performance by Dev Patel, the older Jamal; bullet-speed editing and in-your-face direction so it left no time to contemplate anything that happened and, of course, a preposterous story, even when you try to suspend disbelief. I would've much rather seen Rachel Getting Married, Wendy and Lucy or Burn After Reading make the list.
Finally, I want to say I really enjoy your articles, Dave K, and like someone else asked you, can you please also list who you think should be on the final list in all major categories...cheers!

this is a decent list of movies, though i've only had the chance to see 3 of them so far. I have high hopes for frost/nixon and millionaire, and will see them soon. however, this year's movies lack the general quality and amazement of last year's films, which boasted awe-inspiring experiences such as no country for old men, there will be blood, michael clayton, sweeney todd, jesse james and ratatouille. (among others) Wall-E is a masterpiece, and the best film of 2008 (check the ratings on metacritic.com) but if it will be the second animated movie to receive a best-picture nod, I say probably not. it would easily get my vote, however. the film is breathtaking and relevant, a instant classic.

Hey, TJ, tell me how this was a "comic book movie". Yes, I know it's based on characters originating in comics, but this was a well made crime drama. There was no Burger King product placement, no bad puns, or "Pow!"'s on the screen. Too bad you can't remove your limitations to see it for what it really is. I guess you'd call Shawshank Redemption just a "movie from some short story Stephen King wrote".
