Those of you who felt that Heath Ledger was robbed when the National Board of Review named Milk’s Josh Brolin as Best Supporting Actor of the year can now rejoice: Heath Ledger has won his first U.S. award for his performance in The Dark Knight, from the Washington, D.C., Film Critics. Meanwhile, just days after winning Best Picture honors from the NBR, Slumdog Millionaire received the same honor from the D.C. group, along with prizes for its director, Danny Boyle; screenwriter, Simon Beaufoy; and breakout star, Dev Patel. Watching the movie for a second time over the weekend has solidified my feeling that this is a film that could really go the distance; it’ll certainly fare very well when the Broadcast Film Critics Association announces its nominees tomorrow. All of which is making my boss, EW managing editor Rick Tetzeli, a bit nervous…check out his thoughts on PopWatch. Here’s the full Washington, D.C., lineup.

Best Foreign Film should’ve gone to THE EDGE OF HEAVEN. Why isn’t this brilliant film getting recognized???
Is Let the Right One In that creepy-looking vampire movie? It’s actually good?
Sweden should be ashamed for not submitting “Let the Right One In” to the Oscar academy as their submission for best foreign film. It’s brilliant, creepy and very original.
Pretty cool Mickey Rourke is off to a good start too.
Lisa Schwartzbaum can kiss Meryl’s behind.
When are the Golden Globe noms due out?
yay heath ledger!
Best ensemble for Doubt? I’m sure it’s great but it seems Phillip Seymour Hoffman is jammed down our throats as much as Shia LeBeouf. I still have yet to see anything with him that made me say, “Wow!” Toby Jones’ portrayal of Capote in INFAMOUS was leaps and bounds better than PSH’s portrayal of the same character in CAPOTE. Over rated? Yes, just a bit. He also was horribly miscast in EMPIRE FALLS.
Doug,
That is why the “Best Foreign Film” category is a farce. Only one film per country? Ludicrous. “Let the Right One In” was the best film in a language other than English I saw since “4 Months, 3 weeks, 2 Days.” Oh I forgot…that wasn’t nominated last year, either.
Yeah. This makes me happy. Sorta. It’s sad how this was… his year. Should so not have been his last year. I really, really miss this guy.
I think Anjelica Huston should have won Best Supprting Actress for Choke… She was outstanding in that film.. Her performance was sad, funny and moving! I hope she gets an Oscar nom
Best Supporting Actress
Rosemarie DeWitt, Rachel Getting Married
I really like that one personally …
So glad Dewitt from Rachel Getting Married was recognized because I thought she outshined Anne Hathaway in that film. I hope that she and Viola Davis are recognized by the big O. I liked Slumdog a lot but I still haven’t seen anything I really loved.
I am happy for all winners, but particularly for Meryl. Let this be her year. She has waited 26 years for another Oscar–truly far too long for the best actor around.
Jasper, I loved Hathaway’s performance in Rachel Getting Married. Dewitt & Hathaway were both great! Most of the heart of this film belongs to the Great Bill Irwin.
Certainly the most worthy award given that I can see on that board. Next hopefully is the Oscar. I still miss him very much- I cant even imagine what its like to be his family. I am sitting here with the Dark Knight movie in my hands cant wait to watch it later. PSH is a very overrated actor, I dont know why the critics always give him credit for doing so little or stuff that doesnt even interst people.
Lina Leandersson in Let the right one in should be nominated best actress
Let the right one in IS Sweden’s contribution to the Oscars
