The same day it picked up six Spirit Award nominations, Frozen River won two big prizes at last night’s Gotham Awards in New York. The Sundance hit, about a cash-strapped woman who drives illegal immigrants across the Canada/U.S. border, took home trophies for Best Feature and Breakthrough Actor for Melissa Leo’s riveting lead performance. (Incidentally, the Gotham Awards echoed this year’s Sundance ceremony, as the festival’s two Grand Jury prizewinners, Frozen River and the Hurricane Katrina documentary Trouble the Water, both won again last night.) Meanwhile, the casts of Synecdoche, New York and Vicky Cristina Barcelona shared the Best Ensemble award, and Ballast filmmaker Lance Hammer took home the Breakthrough Director prize. I had the distinct pleasure of sitting with The Reader director Stephen Daldry at the event. But beforehand, I braved the crowded red carpet and managed to grab quick chats with five of the night’s leading ladies: Amy Adams (Doubt), Michelle Williams (Wendy and Lucy), Rosemarie DeWitt (Rachel Getting Married), Penélope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), and the big winner herself, Melissa Leo. Watch the mini-interviews below.

I do not understand all this buzz for Frozen River. It was OK but nothing special. It’s not the type of movie that you want to see over and over again. For it to be that type of movie, it would have to be complex, which it isn’t.
You’re fascinated with restrained acting, it appears!
Also, love the scarved one’s reaction to the quote about Wendy and Lucy.
FROZEN RIVER is by far one of the most timely and affecting movies of 2008.Someone doesn’t find the film complex? I suggest they read up on current immigration issues and conflicts…the film captured the social, economic, and political impact immigration has on our country and its citizens.
I am glad that Frozen River gets its due from the Gotham folks. It is not a high-budget film and its editing is not frenetic. Its lighting makes for a Dogme95 re-evaluation and its narrative pace very rarely devolve into Hollywoodism. But the heart of the movie and the performances anchored by Melissa Leo are something to behold. Sure, this is not a movie to make you feel good, but its open-endedness is more life-like and closer to what’s happening. But then tastes are ultimately subjective. I am just glad the Gotham voters thought the same way I did when I saw this film.
