After weeks of idle speculation by the likes of me, the awards season really kicks off this Thursday with the announcement of the National Board of Review’s list of honorees. A largely mysterious group made up of mostly older film historians and cinephiles, the NBR usually leans toward prestige films with a curve ball or two thrown in (The Bucket List on last year’s top 10, for instance). While they also give out awards for Best Actor and Best Actress (Clint Eastwood and Kate Winslet, I’m thinking), I’m most interested to see their top 10 list for this year. If I had to guess what their No. 1 film will be, I’d go the obvious route and say The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. And here are my predictions for their entire top 10:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Doubt
Frost/Nixon
Gran Torino
Milk
Rachel Getting Married
The Reader
Revolutionary Road
Slumdog Millionaire
The Visitor
Post your top-10 guesses below. And on Thursday I’ll give a shoutout to the OscarWatcher who gets the most correct.

The Dark Knight

Rachel Getting Married

I would agree with all of those, except I still think The Dark Knight could sneak in. So I would say…
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight

Slumdog Millionaire

I don’t think The Dark Knight will be on the NBR’s Top Ten list because it wasn’t good enough. I would include Happy-Go-Lucky and The Edge of Heaven.

Gran Torino
The Dark Knight and Wall-E both deserve recognition this year. I really hope it happens.
I am not going to predict anything here. I just want to say that I am more interested in seeing whether or not The Dark Knight makes it onto any Best Picture lists, including the Academy Awards. It broke so many stereotypes about superhero, summer, and popcorn movies that it would be great to see it recognized.
Any Top Ten List that does not include Wall-E pretty much invalidates itself instantly.

Since they give a Best Film award and a separate Top 10, I’ll just name 10 and assume one of those will be chosen as Best Film.

The Dark Knight
Doubt
Frost/Nixon
Gran Torino

Slumdog Millionaire

I won’t include Wall-E since it will likely get stuck with Best Animated Feature like Ratatouille did last year.

In no particular order:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Doubt
Slumdog Millionaire
Wall-E
Revolutionary Road
Gran Torino
Frost/Nixon
Milk
Rachel Getting Married
The Dark Knigh (wishful thinking I know but what a fantastic film)
Is it just me, or does Frost/Nixon seem overrated? The dialogue from the trailer didn’t impress me, Ron Howard has never been the greatest director, and Frank Langella really overdoes the voice. I don’t think it will turn out to be all that great.
Slumdog Millionaire
The Reader
Dark Knight
Milk
Rachel Getting Married
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Revolutionary Road
Frost/Nixon

I think a curveball could go to Iron Man or a lesser known indie like Towelhead or Brideshead Revisited
