One of the many wrenches the late addition of The Reader threw into the Oscar race was the question of whether Kate Winslet, who also stars in the upcoming domestic drama Revolutionary Road, would have to compete against herself for a nomination. Well, word has now come from the Weinstein Co. (the studio releasing The Reader) that she’ll be campaigned in the Best Supporting Actress category for that film, leaving Revolutionary Road her only shot at a Best Actress nod. Could she now earn her sixth and seventh Oscar nominations and score dual acting nods like Cate Blanchett did last year? I’d love to see that happen.
Though Winslet can now breathe a sigh of relief, the issue still remains unresolved for her Reader costar, Ralph Fiennes. He delivered a strong supporting performance in The Duchess, but his role in The Reader, which he shares with a younger actor named David Kross, could fit in either category. Right now the Weinstein Co. has him slated for Best Actor, which is a tough category already. If he ends up in the supporting race for The Reader (and he’s said to be fantastic in the film), he’ll be in the less competitive race but may risk splitting his own vote. Next time, Ralph, can you try being horrible in one of your movies so we don’t have to stress over things like this?

She wont be the first performer since Julianne moore to score dual acting nods, what about Jamie foxx, or Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett had two nods only last year (Elizabeth and I’m Not There)
How soon we forget
My first priority this year is the election, but my second priority is Kate Winslet winning an Oscar. It’s just wrong that she’s zero for five.
If u read the article then you would know that he did mention Cate Blanchett. How soon people are to jump to conclusions…
Kate Winslet really needs to win an Oscar this year. Seriously, just give it to her already. I agree with Meg, it’s really wrong that she’s 0 for 5. She should have won years ago.
Is anybody still appalled that Kate Winslet has not yet won an Oscar? I say it’s about time that she gets the credit she deserves. Let’s get Kate elected!
Love Kate, she deserves it!! Its ridiculous that she hasnt won one yet!!!
I’m really hoping this year is the year Kate Winslet FINALLY gets an Oscar!! It’s long overdue and although she doesn’t need to win for EVERYONE to know she is an amazing actress, the recognition from her peers would be wonderful. Now,I know that what i’m about to say is wishful thinking but how amazing would it be if she not only garners TWO nominations this year but also WINS BOTH TIMES??!!
Kate Winslet is a GOD. Enough said. That this woman has not yet woman an Oscar (and Gwyneth Apple Paltrow has??) is a travesty! Kate Winslet better this year, so something, I don’t care if it’s a toothpaste commercial, something!!
Oh my god…if kate winslet won BOTH oscars this year i would literally have a coronary and die…this woman is like meryl streep…she deserves an oscar for everything she does…the fact that she is oscar-less is a travesty…go kate!!! i kind of figured they would push her in supporting for this film, considering she is going lead for revolutionary road and her dedication lies with that film.
Out of all the actors who are competing with two performances this year (josh brolin, penelope cruz, ralph fiennes, etc.) kate winslet definitely has the best shot of landing BOTH!
Kate Winslet is AMAZING, I still can’t believe she doesn’t have an Oscar, she is a PHENOMENAL actress. Just hand her an Oscar cause she has been deserving them since she pretty much began her career.
I’m glad to hear all the Kate love because she’s definitely one of my favorites but I honestly don’t think this is her year. I have a feeling that if Doubt is as good as it looks in the trailer this will be Oscar #3 for Streep.
Kate Winslet is not the first, nor will she be the last actress overlooked for a competitive Oscar. There certainly have been others in the past more deserving, like Deborah Kerr. Too much is made of this award and it only gets worse every year.
I’m hoping that this is not only the year for Kate Winslet but also for Ralph Fiennes. BOTH of them deserve Oscars already–as if either of them really care. They’ve managed fine without it so far.

I totally agree with most of the above postings. Kate Winslet is a fine actress , and deserves the award – but – I would actaully like to SEE her performances in these two films – before i can pass true judgement. Does anybody out there in EW readerland – know the release date for these TWO movies ? I am guessing in late December – usually a “for your consideration ” releasing period.
I look forward to seeing BOTH of the films mentioned.
As much as I adore Kate and as much as she deserves to win for any number of her previous films, I really hope she *doesn’t* win Best Actress. Winners under 40 disappear or do atrocious work once they win: Helen Hunt, Gwyneth, Hilary, Julia, Halle, Nicole, Charlize, Reese.
Trust me: if we want Kate’s quality work to continue and be undisturbed, she’s better off without one.
It’s a crime that Kate doesn’t have an Oscar yet. Ditto for Ralph Fiennes. Come on Oscar voters! Get with the program already!
Much as I like and appreciate Kate Winslet, she at least has five nominations and the magnificent Christian Bale has none. Where’s the justice in that? Look at his body of work and tell me why he hasn’t been nominated.
This article lists Ralph Fiennes’ performances in The Duchess and The Reader, but it does not mention his acclaimed performance in In Bruges from way early in the year. I can’t comment on whether he should get nominated for that one since I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I think people ought to remember earlier work as well as recent work.
Angelina Jolie is a gifted artist.
Yes, Ralph and Kate are freaking amazing, I love them both. They are sexy and talented. But I love what you said Sarah C about the actresses under 40…it is so true! The other day I was thinking about Halle and going, “Why DO we make such a big deal out her, she’s done 1 or 2 good movies?!”
Hard to understand why any studio would deliberately place an actor in the supporting category this year. Heath Ledger will win that award in a walk.
Really love Kate Winslet but I think it’s a disgrace that Meryl Streep only has one supporting and one leading when Hillary Swank, Jodie Foster and Sally Field each have two lead Oscars. So if it has to be someone other than Meryl, I will be rooting for Kate.
I will be soooo not happy if Meryl Streep beats out Kate. I do think the fact that she is zero for five and pretty universally liked will work in her favor though.
Actually if Meryl Streep wins best actress and Kate wins best supporting that would be great with me too. BTW I have been searching online for trailers for The Reader but can’t find any and it’s coming out in a month.
Hey Starchild, but Sally Field, Jodie Foster Hilary Swank? Those are amazing actresses, especially Foster. Don’t understand why you’re mad at them winning two lead Oscars just because Streep has one lead Oscar (and one supporting). Streep is great but they are great too. I think Winslet will have a strong shot at supporting with the Reader but I think Meryl Streep will win her 3rd Oscar for Doubt. Just my prediction. I think Kate Winslet’s best performance was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. She should have won for that or Sense and Sensibility already IMO.
Kate Winslet is my favorite actress. I think she is amazingly talented, and the fact that she has not yet won an Oscar is ridiculous. I will be thrilled if she is nominated (or wins) this year, but the fact that she didn’t win for Eternal Sunshine will still hurt.
I love Swank, Field and Foster but I think if you asked them where they stood with Ms. Streep, the most nominated actress ever (or maybe she’s second) they would say behind her. Yea for Streep, Best Actress, Winslet, Best Supporting.
What I meant was Streep has a greater and more acclaimed body of work than they do combined. She has long been deserving of another Oscar. Alas, playing make-up never really works though. Somebody always gets the short end of that stick. So the best to Ms. Winslet and I hope she wins — if she gave the best performance – not because she hasn’t won one. And the best to Ms. Streep – if she gave the best performance and not because I feel she is taken for granted and due for one. Wins for both – for great performances – would put a smile on my face.
